Online Shopping Safety: How to Protect Yourself from Fraud & Identity Theft

Online shopping has become a part of everyday life. From household essentials to big-ticket items, nearly 95% of Americans shop online at least once a year. Think about how many times you online shop in a week? For most of us, it’s a lot. But as the convenience of online shopping grows, so does the risk.

In 2023, the U.S. saw a record number of data breaches affecting 353 million people. The FBI received more than 880,000 cybercrime reports, totaling an estimated $12.5 billion in losses, and the FTC received more than five million consumer reports.

Staying safe online has never been more important. Before you click “Checkout”, keep these smart shopping tips in mind.

1. Use unique usernames and passwords

If you create accounts with online retailers, avoid using the same login information everywhere.

One hacked password = access to everything.

A password manager can help you create, store, and protect complex passwords—and many offer two-factor authentication for extra security.

2. Never share your Social Security number

Legitimate online retailers will never need your SSN to complete a purchase. If a site asks for it, that’s a major red flag.

3. Don’t click promotional email links

That “50% off!” email may look convincing—but scammers often create look-alike emails and fake websites.

Instead of clicking a link, type the retailer’s website directly into your browser to ensure you’re visiting the real site.

4. Avoid online shopping on public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is convenient—but risky. Because it typically isn’t encrypted, hackers can easily intercept your data or create fake networks to access your device. Save your shopping for a secure, private network.

5. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true

If a price looks unbelievably low—or a deal sounds overly generous—it’s probably a scam.
Common examples include drastically discounted products or “Like our page to get a free smartphone!” offers.

6. Use a virtual credit card number

Many credit card companies offer single-use or virtual card numbers. These mask your real credit card number during online purchases and still work normally on your statement.

7. Monitor your credit card statements

Make it a habit to check your transactions regularly. Set up alerts for purchases over a certain amount so you’re notified quickly of anything unusual—large or small.

8. Talk with your insurance agent

Adding a cyber coverage endorsement to your homeowners or renters insurance policy can help you help you restore your credit in the event of identity theft or fraud.

9. Research retailers before buying

If you’re shopping from a store you’ve never heard of, take a minute to look up reviews. A quick search can help you determine whether a retailer is legitimate and trustworthy.
