Have a Teen Driver? Erie’s TeenSMART Program Could Help Them Drive Safer—and Help You Save

If you have a new driver in your house, you probably remember the first time they pulled out of the driveway without you sitting in the passenger seat.

It’s exciting for them.

For parents? Maybe a little terrifying.

You want your teen to have independence, but you also want them to develop good habits behind the wheel. And then there’s another concern that comes with adding a young driver to the family: the cost of auto insurance.

If your family is insured with Erie Insurance, there may be a program that can help with both.

It’s called TeenSMART®, and it’s designed to help young drivers improve their driving skills while potentially helping families qualify for an auto insurance discount.

What Is TeenSMART?

TeenSMART is a driver training program created specifically for teens.

Instead of simply reviewing traffic laws and road signs, TeenSMART focuses on helping young drivers develop skills they can use in real-world driving situations.

The program combines computer-based learning, driving simulations, and activities designed to help teens recognize risks and make better decisions behind the wheel.

For a new driver who is still gaining experience, that extra practice can be valuable.

What Does TeenSMART Teach?

Think about some of the situations that can be challenging for a brand-new driver.

What happens when the car in front of them suddenly stops?

Are they leaving enough following distance?

Do they know where to look for potential hazards before entering an intersection?

How well can they manage distractions while driving?

TeenSMART focuses on skills such as hazard recognition, managing speed and space, anticipating other drivers’ actions, and making safer decisions behind the wheel.

Those are skills that become second nature to many experienced drivers—but teens are still developing them.

There’s Another Benefit: Potential Auto Insurance Savings

We know adding a teen driver to your auto insurance can be expensive.

That’s why we want our Erie Insurance clients to know about the potential savings available through TeenSMART.

Eligible Erie customers may qualify for an auto insurance discount after their teen successfully completes the program.

Erie customers can also access TeenSMART at a special discounted price through Erie’s partnership with ADEPT Driver.

That means your teen gets additional driver training while your family may also be able to reduce some of the added insurance cost that comes with having a young driver.

We’d call that a win-win.

How Long Does TeenSMART Take?

TeenSMART isn’t something your teen has to complete all at once.

The program typically takes several hours to finish, and families can break the training into smaller sessions that work with their schedules.

Once the required portions of the program are successfully completed, eligible Erie customers can provide the necessary completion information so the applicable discount can be added to their policy.

Why Blue Marsh Recommends Teen Driver Training

At Blue Marsh, we love finding ways to help our clients save money on insurance.

But when we’re talking about teen drivers, safety comes first.

Your teen may have passed their driving test, but that doesn’t mean they’re finished learning how to drive.

Experience takes time.

Programs like TeenSMART give young drivers another opportunity to practice important skills, recognize dangerous situations, and become more confident behind the wheel.

If there’s an insurance discount available for doing it? Even better.
